Petters Limited was known as JB Petter & Sons of Yoevil until 1910, when it got renamed Petters Limited. The firm is known for its production of high-quality petrol and diesel engines. Its first uniquely designed engine dates to 1892, when founder J.B. Petter an agricultural engineer innovatively built an oil engine, and then high-speed steam engine in 1894, and finally the UK’s first internal combustion engine inside a moving vehicle in 1895. By 1904, a range of oil engines were produced ranging up to 30 hp. Later in 1911, engines up to 300hp were manufactured, which won the company the Grand Prix at the Milan International Exhibit. From 1911, the company produced 1500 engines yearly with a workforce of half a thousand men. Since these early days, Petters Limited have slowly grown their presence and has become a leading brand in the engines industry during the 20th century. In 1986, Petters Limited merged with rival company R A Lister & company, to form Lister Petter.
